That wasn't what he said at all.... did you even read the interview?
He's saying western game markets are kicking the japanese market's asses because of how the Japanese have this "employment for life" law which allows them to put out games which can range from good to downright shitty as long as they break even. It's an excuse to be lazy because the bottom line over there is that the low men on the totem pole don't get credit for stuff they make and they have every right to be lazy when they develop their games.
It's the men on the top of the corporate ladder that take credit for good games and recieve all the blame if something goes awry. It's why Keiji's gotten a lot of flak for his mistakes but Capcom recieves credit for his successes. That's just plain ****'d up and it's no wonder he wants to move closer to the western game markets.
Oh, and you could say the same about Mario games as MegaMan games. BUT Nintendo's always been about the gameplay. Their games are fun to play even if they reuse the same framework. I could say the same thing about Wolfenstein, Doom, Half-Life, Halo, Battlefield, Team Fortress, Unreal Tournament, Time Splitters, etc. To summarize: "BOOM! Headshot."
It's probably the reason he wanted out of doing nothing but fighting games, crossovers, and chop suey of what he's done for the past "I dunno how many years." It's why he's going independant.
Remember, we're talking about the man who created Street Figher and MegaMan, and although those were simpler times, he even said it in the interview that those times have changed. He's literally denouncing the very design strategies he helped create.
