Alright, I got this idea and after running it through my head, it seems like it'd actually work. I'm going to play and beat MegaMan Legends 1, PS1 version, without collecting any zenny. I know it's a weird stipulation for a playthrough, but I thought it was pretty unique. Not sure if anyone has ever tried it. Not sure if it's even possible. Are you ever forced to collect zenny in the game? So I will use this thread to post my progress with this playthrough.
Game: MegaMan Legends (PS1 version)
Challenge: Beat the game on Normal difficulty without picking up any Zenny. No time limit, no item percentage required.
Progress: Day 1: Started a New Game. Ran through the intro ruins without killing a single enemy. Opened the chest for the Power Raiser buster part, equipped it. Killed the first boss normally. Didn't collect any items in Apple Market. I suppose I could collect the parts for the Vacuum Arm... but I won't need it anyways obviously. Ran after the Junk Store owner, only killed the worm reaverbots, avoided the zenny they dropped. Went further in, killing everything but avoiding zenny, and collected the Rapid Fire part. No items collected in Downtown. Had a hell of a time fighting the Bonnes. I had to restart about 5 times after accidentally collecting zenny. Tron tore apart 4 houses, they'll never be rebuilt. Servbots tore down the bank and 2 houses in City Hall. I wanted to keep the Police Station standing for the sidequests, not sure if I'll need them though. Can't donate to help restore buildings... that sucks. Explored Cardon Ruins with my license. Got the Old Shield and Buster Unit, killed enemies in my way but managed to avoid zenny. Saved file before heading to Clozer Woods.
So far the poor man playthrough is going well. I just hope I'm able to actually do it. I'll keep posting my progress here.

If only this approach worked in real life XD But if the player is skilled enough, it is possible to beat the game without the zenny to buy upgrades or anything. That just means that the downtown and city hall areas will stay wrecked from the Bonne attack and poor little Ira may never walk again.

Well, Danny, unless you find some Range Buster parts, you're going to need to collect some zenny for the battle with the Fockewolf, I think. Or use the Active Buster, I guess.

I'm pretty sure that you can just talk to data and ask him for a range booster of sorts (right after beating the feldynaught) but, that's about it. Unless you have roll whip something up.

Well, Danny, unless you find some Range Buster parts, you're going to need to collect some zenny for the battle with the Fockewolf, I think. Or use the Active Buster, I guess. Yeah I was afraid of how certain boss battles will go. I will do everything I can though to figure out a way to do it before I buy anything though. I'm pretty sure that you can just talk to data and ask him for a range booster of sorts (right after beating the feldynaught) I completely forgot about that. Right before the City Hall fight you can get a free Ranger Booster alpha from Data. I was THIS close to starting my file over for it... but I really hope I never get desperate enough for +2 range. Day 2: Didn't get to play much today, won't get to play at all tomorrow. I regret not getting the Range Booster alpha from Data as I mentioned, but I'm going to try and go without it. Got a Shield Repair from Data though, might as well. I had Roll build the Machine Buster, then went into Yass Plains, collecting the Safety Helmet, Flower, and picked up the Cannon Kit from the ruins. Beat Teisel, no problem. Had Roll make the Helmet and Powered Buster. I still have the Machine Buster equipped though. I saved right outside the Cardon Forest sub gate. Roll ran me over several times. Still haven't picked up any zenny. I'll continue later this weekend. And if I keep debating it in my mind, I might just restart the run for that Range Booster...

This is an interesting challenge, I might try it. However I cant even beat that water robot thing on an emulator. Also I think there are a few buster parts somewhere in the sub-gate ruins... yet it would be a royal pain to go get them without killing something. (Poor Ira)

Didn't get to play at all this weekend. Played a little more first thing when I got home today though.
Day 3: Ventured into Cardon Sub Gate. Got the items, got the refractor, got the hell out. Hardly killed anything, had to restart once though after having zenny fall on me. I'm collecting museum items even though I doubt I'll do that sidequest. Can't get the Giant Horn without avoiding zenny afterall. Had Roll build me up the Jump Springs so I could explore more of the ruins. The items I got didn't help at all though, just the Rollerboard, Rapidfire Barrel and Pen Light. Roll made the Machine Gun but that doesn't help my buster set up at all. This reminded me of the Police Station sidequest though. This is exactly why I made it a priority to save the station, it got me the Power Blaster L and R parts. Now my Buster set up is Buster Unit and Power Blaster L. Not bad for a cheapskate. I think I can beat the Bonnes lake battle coming up, but I'll save that for tomorrow.

Now that I think about it...
The News flash thingy hasn't been updated yet and I think that we should update it with our new summer playthrough.

Yeah good point SIM, I'll change that tonight.
Day 4: Had no problems with the lake battle. Chose to fight instead of retreat, so the boat had about 1/4 health left when I finished off the Balcon Gelede. Ran into the ruins avoiding killing any reaverbots, but I took stupid damage and wasn't about to fight the boss with only 2 units of health, so I left with the treasure real quick and had Roll whip up the Adapter Plug, which made the Garudoriten boss fight all too easy. Used Power Blaster L and R and Machine Gun. For free buster parts, they certainly got the job done nicely. After that I repaired the Flutter, had Roll build the Grand Grenade and re-explored the ruin network for my other useless items (force of habit). I soooo wanna do that Jet Skates glitch into the Main Gate for the Drill Arm again, but I'll try and keep this a glitchless run. I've just lately gotten used to getting the Drill Arm earlier then usual, it'll be nice not to exploit it again for a change. Wrapped up some other sidequests, helped the kids with their secret base, dropped off museum items, the usual. Sucks that these buildings are still flattened. 4 houses and the bank... such an eye sore. I'll play some more tomorrow.

Hmm... Are you planning on making the shining laser? If so, you wont be able to get the giant horn (or whatever its called) because you obtain zenny while getting past the first few parts of the race mini game on the technical course.
But if your just collecting items to put in the museum then that's fine.

Sorry I didn't update yesterday, I did play the game but I played a different file. And yeah, Mr. Rain, I'm just collecting useless things like museum items cause it's a habit.
Day 5: Took out the Clozer Woods Sub Gate with relative ease. I forgot how cool the Grand Grenade is, still had it on accidentally when I went inside and it was useful in a few situations. I even timed it right so I killed all 3 Karumuna Bash with one grenade (to avoid running into one's zenny), quite a blast, wish I recorded it. Got all the items and had Roll build the Active Buster, which I used for the Gesellschaft fight. Speaking of that, the battle in the clouds went better then I expected. I'm almost considering doing this run on Hard Mode. I didn't need to use my Special Weapon at all (emptied it on the beginning Drache's though). Sniper Scope gave me plenty of range, and I combined it with Power Blaster R and Machine Gun. I got hit by the Fockewolf's missles twice, but other then that, no problem at all. The Main Gate is open, and I got Bruno to look forward too. I'll most likely backtrack with the Drill Arm before that boss fight tomorrow though. I'm 3:03:32 into my save file now, this has been a fun run so far.

Alright, started playing again late tonight. I'm so close to the end, I'm almost thinking of finishing the game tonight and posting how it goes with a double (triple) post.
Day 6: Went into the Main Gate and got the Buster Unit Omega, very nice, really helps my buster set up. Had no problems with the reaverbots, got my items and headed out through the entrance, don't wanna fight Bruno just yet. Had Roll build the Drill Arm, which I used to dig up any remaining items throughout the ruin network. Really sucks about the Giant Horn museum item, true to it's expensive reputation, the Shining Laser cannot be obtained without getting zenny. After all the digging and items obtained, my final buster set up for the game shall be: Buster Unit Omega Blaster Unit R Power Blaster R Not bad for a non-profit playthrough. Took out the 3 Sub Cities with no problems. Epic fight with Bruno though, I got hit twice, TWICE and I managed to survive, thanks to the helmet. Sure it looks dumb but man it saved me. I got hit out of the air, broke my sheild and I landed with no health... that would've sucked. So I'm all set for the final area. I'm really excited about this. I'm all jacked up on Mountain Dew and ready to tackle Juno. I'll probably post tonight afterwards.

Alright! That does it, I beat MegaMan Legends 1, PS1 version, without picking up any zenny. This was a lot easier then I thought it would be. But still a lot of fun. I had no problems reaching Juno, and during the fight, I never got hit... once you find the better buster parts of the game, a no zenny run feels like any other run, just without a good Special Weapon. Juno's gone, the island is safe and MegaMan is just as poor as he was when he landed. NOW I can understand why Roll would sell all his equipment, the idiot never picked up any zenny! Final time was 4:34:05, but I never meant for it to be a fast playthrough (I always watch the cutscenes). It was weird saying goodbye to some of the characters who I didn't help out. The pregnant lady said she was having a difficult birth, Ira was cruising along in her chair, and that poor idiot was wandering around outside looking for his life savings... I think this is the only time I've seen these NPC quotes, pretty depressing. And after seeing all this, MegaMan's all "lol k goodbye." and takes off. Damn do I love this game. The ending gets me everytime, fist pump of awesomeness!

Haha... interesting challenge that should be added to our summer playthrough.
I wonder of MML2 could be done that way.
Obviously TMOTB could not be done this way. You'd have to go with something like a straight run with only mission Zenny ONLY, in order to keep it as close to a no-zenny run.
Obviously.... you would not ever do Mission 1 because that's the point of the mission in the first place!
