Just a quick review, I'll do a deeper one tomorrow. Beat the game and am about 90% done with all the Clear Save content. Just missing a few Giga Cards )which I cannot get here) and two Mega Cards.
Combat;
Your arena is set up like this;
|*|*|*|
|*|*|*|
|*|*|*|
|*|*|*|
|y|y|y|
* = Enemy Territory Y= Your territory.
There is no way to gain more ground, you are stuck with those three tiles. But with card abilities and your Lock On skill (which allows you to teleport in front of your target or to the most advantageous position when using a Battle Card) this really isn't a problem.
There are essentially five basic card types;
Throws, Melee, Recover/Aura and Buster. These will be your primary cards and can perform various elemental additions.
Examples; Plasma Cannon, Electric and Stun attack. Fire Bomb which is a fire based grenade attack or BubbleShot which is basically BubbleWrap from Battle Network. Then the Elemental Blades or Hero Swords.
Next are your more advanced cards;
Counters, Tiles, Destructions and Match Cards
Counters are cards you can only use when you are hit. These tend to be match cards, but there are some exceptions. Such as a card that lets you counter with a 140 Damage Sword attack.
Tile Cards can elter your own tiles (Such as Holy, which halves damage while you stand on it) or change the enemies field. Some cards are mixed, such as Ice Meteor which is a Tile and Throw combination.
Destruction Cards are fairly rare, having only seen them in the later end of the game. Basically think of them as Negative Auras. They destroy enemies that don't meet certain criteria. such as one of my favorites for Virus hunting; BlackHole1, which destroys all enemies with 100 or fewer life points.
Match Cards are cards only used in Player Versus Player matches. Basically your Trap styled Cards.
Finally, what I call Summon Cards (or Navi cards, but these aren't technically Navis). Basically they do what Navi cards did, summon a navi to perform it's special ability. ALL Navi cards are considered Mega class cards. So you can only have three total in your deck.
Later in the game you get the Card "Star Force - Pegasus/Leo/Dragon" that gives you a boost in combat by increasing your charge damage and adding an element to your charge attack. You get this card's special based on what version of the game you receive. I purchased Pegasus, so I focused on Ice.
---
How cards work;
Basically, it works like the Battle Network series when it comes to how the custom gauge works and combat abilities. Wide Sword slashes sideways, Longsword out, Bomb is thrown forward towards your target.
Similarities end there.
What you are given is fairly open ended system of cards. There are two types of cards when it comes to selection; Silver cards and normal cards.
Silver cards are what you can basically consider your Wild Cards, they can always be selected. Which makes them extremely potent in combat. However, most silver cards are status effect cards or tile cards. Now, this is where your deck gets interesting. You can select six cards from your deck as your "Favorites," which makes them Silver Cards in combat. The limitation on this is that you can only have Two Mega class cards or One Giga class selected, rest must be normal class cards. My preference was just making all my Melee (Fist and Sword Cards) favorites and one Giga (you can buy one and are given one. The other three must be gotten via Brother Bond, which I will explain later.)
You are given six cards at the beginning of combat to select from, out of your 30 card deck. Three on top, three on bottom. You can select two normal cards from the same column (Two going down) and any Silver cards. Or any duplicate cards and any Silver cards. This can be important later when you are trying to set up combinations, as the cards that are unselected slide towards the left hand of the screen. So, a little bit of strategy is applied even in this basic action.
Later, when you activate your Star Force card in combat, you can choose three cards from a row (three across) and silver cards, or two down and silver cards.
